NSC Safety Spring Conference & Expo

Corrie Pitzer joint keynote with Tim Page-Bottorff

NSC Safety Spring Conference & Expo
May 14-16, Rosemount, IL

It’s a heated debate: Safety I vs. Safety II.

Safety I includes long-standing strategies such as behavior-based safety and risk/safety engineering. Safety II promotes human and organizational performance. The safety professional is caught between these two schools of thought, which have some directly opposing ideas, such as their beliefs on the issue of Zero Harm: Safety I states that zero is a non-negotiable goal, while Safety II says that aiming for zero is in fact harmful.

Who is right? Join our CEO, Corrie Pitzer, for an engaging keynote, jointly with Tim Page-Bottorff. Tim and Corrie will explore whether these perspectives are at odds with each other, or are they both right…or even both wrong!

Centre for Catastrophic Risk Management

Corrie Pitzer to Present CCRM Webinar

Wednesday, February 14
10:00am PST – 12:00pm PST

Topic: Elimination of Fatalities – Case Studies & Examples from the Field

The High Reliability Organization (HRO) – what comes next?

The famous formula E=mc2  of Albert Einstein has been re-defined by his famous brother Alfred…where the Ef (Elimination of Fatalities  Ef) = mc3

As part of a multi-year intervention at a large mining corporation, Corrie Pitzer developed and deployed a dynamic ‘high reliability system’ with surprising results and success. He will discuss lessons on high reliability theory from the field and the “Deep Safe Organization”.

Following ‘deepdive risk discussions’ with 8000 front line workers in dangerous jobs, discovering over 2000 fatal risks exposure, and after reviewing over 10000 reports of potential Serious Injury, Fatal or Catastrophic (SIFC) risks, a new ‘model’ for risk emerged: The Random, Chaotic, Complex risks that lurks in the depth of all organizations – waiting to be discovered, or to explode in events.

Corrie gained new insights from what he calls the” 3rd Layer of Risk”, where not only the Black Swans live, but also the Purple Dragons, the Yellow Elephants and the mysterious White Slugs.

Corrie will discuss “8 missing links” in safety, glaringly obvious, but we fail to ‘see’ them, or manage them.  And he will unveil the new formula: Ef=mc3

Keynote Title: The seven missing links in safety that we have all missed
Date: February 27, 2024
Time: 9:15am – 10am

The typical focus in safety is that the human being is our weakest link in safety, that they are often blamed as the ones who have accidents, make mistakes, or poor choices. This flies in the face of the true nature of humans: skilled and naturally able to deal with risks, incredible brain power, and with a capability to deal with many risks in the work environment.

In this presentation of Corrie Pitzer, you will see the “power of front-line people” and how we prevent many more accidents than what we make.

When Does ‘New View Safety’ Become Dangerous?

Corrie Pitzer will be presenting a FREE Webinar
in partnership with Safeopedia

December 8
11:00am EST

Join Corrie on his critical self-review of the New View journey that we are on. He has implemented a HOP/SIF combined process 30 years ago in South Africa, between 1986 and 1992, at 62 mines in the Gencor company (later merged with BHP) and has since shared the new view approach to safety with many clients in Australia, and since 2004 in North America.

The focus was always on integration with operational systems, the leadership to drive it and never to create new labels and buzz words. It had to be seamless and even unnoticed. Today, the New View has potentially become a system of its own, added on, and at risk to be what we rail against: Another fad and losing sight of the ultimate vision…eliminating serious injury and death when doing work.

There are at least 10 red flags, in his view, when this can become dangerous, and therefore 10 opportunities to reset, redefine and strengthen the new approach to safety. So, come and join…with an open mind…for a practitioner’s perspective.
